Feel free to visit the fascinating village of "sea gypsies". The village of Sang-ga-u in the southeast of Koh Lanta has a unique group of people called the Sea Gypsies or "Chao Leh" (people of the sea). Formerly living a semi-nomadic life in the Andaman Sea, the marine Indo-Malay origin also were the first settlers on the island 500 years ago. The true origins of the Urak Lawoi, which is the largest of the three groups of Chao Leh also include Moken and Moklen clans. Urak Lawoi language is only spoken language, no written evidence exists to verify their actual origins and listening can only their historical legends and anecdotes to get a sense of their past. They are near the Moken group Surin Island in Phang Nga. Both groups have migrated along the coast of what is now known as Kedah in Malaysia. They then implement separate settlements on various islands in the Andaman Sea. It is generally accepted that they belong to the Malaysian group, although many scholars believe that they came from India.
